UV radiation can be used for multiple purposes in water treatment, but it is primarily employed as a tool to disinfect water, inactivating pathogens without chemicals. For other applications, UV can be used for the removal of organic and inorganic chemicals, including chlorine, chloramines, ozone and total organic carbon (TOC). When combined with oxidants such as ozone or hydrogen peroxide, or semiconductors such as titanium dioxide, UV can be used for the oxidation of refractory chemicals such as chlorinated solvents, taste and odor compounds, and other emerging contaminants.
UV System Parts
A UV water disinfection system is made up of several important parts:
- Germicidal UV lamp
- Ballast or controller unit
- Quartz sleeve
- Reaction chamber
Each of these parts must be in good working order to allow the system to work as it should. Water flows into the reaction chamber, which is sealed using O-rings. Inside this chamber is the UV lamp, which sits inside a quartz UV sleeve. The sleeve is a long, clear tube that protects the lamp while still allowing the correct UV rays to pass through and do their job. The ballast or controller powers the unit and controls the output of the germicidal UV lamp.
he UV lamp should be changed once a year to ensure that it's operating at peak efficiency. Always replace an old lamp with a new one designed to fit your system and provide the required dose of UV radiation to disinfect your water. When you replace the lamp, check the quartz sleeve; UV sleeves can become fouled with various contaminants over time. You may need to clean the sleeve or replace it if it's damaged or cannot be completely cleaned. It's a good idea to check your UV ballast at the same time to make sure that it's providing the power and control that you need.
The Benefits of UV Disinfection
UV disinfection has been successfully applied worldwide for decades, and has numerous advantages over chemical disinfection methods:
- Effective for all types of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa, such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia
- Chemical-free technology, eliminating the need to transport, store, handle or remove potentially dangerous chemicals
- Non-corrosive and no hazards associated with accidental overdosing
- Low capital and operating cost
- Easy to operate and maintain
- No possibly dangerous disinfection by-products (DBPs) formed
- Compact and easy to retrofit
- Efficiency is independent of water pH
- No impact to the aesthetic quality of the water (taste, odor, color)
- Safe and environmentally-friendly
