The Deionization Process
The vast majority of dissolved impurities in modern water supplies are ions such as calcium, sodium, chlorides, and iron. Using a deionized water system for laboratory water, these ions can be removed through a technique called ion exchange. Positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) are exchanged for hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions, respectively, due to the resin's greater affinity for other ions. The ion exchange process occurs on the binding sites of the resin beads. Once depleted of exchange capacity, the resin bed is regenerated with concentrated acid and caustic, which strips away accumulated ions through physical displacement, leaving hydrogen or hydroxyl ions in their place. Click here to read more about Deionization versus Distilled Water.
Deionizer Types
There are four basic forms of deionizers:
1.Disposable cartridges
2.Portable exchange tanks
3.Automatic units
4.Continuous units
A two-bed system employs separate cation and anion resin beds, while mixed-bed deionizers for high purity water use both resins in the same vessel. The highest quality water is produced by mixed-bed deionizers, while two-bed deionizers have a larger capacity. Continuous deionizers, mainly used in labs for polishing, do not require regeneration.
High Quality and Low Prices
US Water focuses on disposable DI cartridges, which provide the highest quality water at the lowest price, with the least amount of hassle. We guarantee the lowest price on the highest quality systems available. Due to our buying power, no one beats our prices.
With laboratory water purification systems from US Water, you receive lower up-front costs since dealing direct saves thousands of dollars. You'll also benefit from lower cost of operation, since most other companies use proprietary filters and membranes (which means you can only purchase the replacements from them at a much higher price). At US Water, we use industry standard sizes and non-proprietary replacement filters and membranes, which saves you thousands of dollars over the life of the system. Not only that, but standardized systems are easier to service (in fact, lab personnel can often change filters themselves). US Water has no commissioned salespeople and dealing directly with us can save you as much as 70% on your system!
US Water offers several standard systems for the laboratory preparation of water, and we can also custom engineer systems for any application – big or small. Call one of our high purity water experts at 800-608-8792 or email us.
