In order to properly size a water softener, the two most important pieces of information to consider are water hardness, and average water usage. With these two inputs, a softener’s capacity can be calculated and properly sized according to your unique needs. With that said, other variables should also be considered such as budget, space, other contaminants, plumbing size, peak flow rate, and water source. It's quite uncommon for someone to taste soft water and think, "This is salty." The amount of sodium added to the water is directly related to the mineral content that was originally present. If you use city water, it’s unlikely that you would detect any salty flavor. However, if your water comes from a private well with very high mineral levels, a water softener might cause a slightly salty taste, but only if you have an exceptionally sensitive palate. To address this, many homeowners add a reverse osmosis system with their water softener. These systems remove sodium and 99% of all other contaminants from the water you use for drinking, cooking, and ice.
A water softener can cause the sacrificial anode rod in a tank-style water heater to corrode slightly faster than hard water might. However, advancements in anode rod technology have led to products that are far more corrosion-resistant. Additionally, for those using tankless water heaters, this concern is minimized as these systems do not rely on anode rods. Overall, the benefits of using a water softener far outweigh these minor considerations, as it protects your plumbing and appliances from the damaging effects of hard water.
Technically, yes, a water softener can reduce or remove iron, but only in small amounts and under certain conditions, such as the right pH, hardness, and type of iron. Due to these variables, it is not recommended to rely on a water softener specifically for iron treatment. Instead, it is advisable to install an iron filter ahead of the water softener. A typical iron filter uses oxidation followed by a backwashing filter with a carbon-based substrate to effectively remove iron.

"The US Matrix water softener is THE ticket for removing hard water calcium as advertised. Totally satisfied with purchasing this unit. Bought some testing strips and tested the water and bingo, no more hard water. Highly recommended unit. One note for DIY installers. The bypass valves when closed allow water to BYPASS the tank and CONTINUE directional water flow in the plumbing . Don’t think like I did and assume the bypass valves restrict water flow when installing. I re-installed the plumbing twice thinking the water would stop at bypass valves due to 90 degree valve orientation. Anyway the unit is awesome."

"I purchased a US Fusion water softener in 2012 and it has been working perfectly since i installed it myself!I did minimal maintenance on it and today it started finally acting up. Seems it lost its time for recharging in the overnight hrs. I forgot there was a coin battery backup for power outages to keep time that i didn’t change since it was new lol!Changed the battery and i am back in business!When it finally does die,i will purchase a new one from US Water systems again 👍"

I did call their tech support and I was connected immediately with someone who answered my questions. "We recently updated our home water treatment setup, and the results have been fantastic. Our configuration starts with a US Water 5-Micron Magna Filter Cartridge, followed by a 1-Micron Magna Filter Cartridge, both feeding directly into a Matrixx Smart Metered Water Softener. This setup replaced an old all-in-one softener system. While the upfront cost for the Matrixx system and dedicated Magna filters is higher than just buying another standard all-in-one unit, the difference in build quality and performance proves it is money well spent. If you have a solid understanding of basic plumbing, installing this system is entirely manageable. The components are well-designed, the instructions are clear, and everything fits together logically without requiring specialized trade secrets to get it running leak-free. The daily difference in our municipal water has been remarkable. The best part is the elimination of hard water spots. Our shower glass stays crystal clear, and dishes come out of the dishwasher looking spotless without needing extra rinsing agents. The taste of our municipal water has improved significantly as well. "I have been waiting for a loooong time to make this huge investment in purchasing and installing a water sooner in my home and I finally did it! Our city water here in Arizona is the WORST water we have in the country! So I did a lot of research in deciding which company to purchase from and I chose US Water systems.
