How the Allegro DI Spot-Free Rinse System Works

DI (deionized) water has nearly all of its minerals and dissolved solids removed, leaving pure water with near-zero TDS. It happens in three quick steps as water flows through the resin beads:

Cation Exchange

Positively charged ions like calcium, sodium and iron are swapped for hydrogen (H+) on the resin beads.

S2

Anion Exchange

Negatively charged ions like chlorides are swapped for hydroxyl (OH-) ions.

S3

Pure Water Out

H+ and OH- combine into pure H2O with near-zero TDS, so nothing is left behind to spot.

DI or deionized water is simply water that has had most of the mineral content and dissolved ion content removed. It is just pure water. The cleanliness of the water is rated as its TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). It should be noted that pure water will not conduct electricity. It's the ions in the water that conduct the electricity. Deionization is simply an ion-exchange process in which water flows through resin beds or resin beads.

DI water systems typically consist of beds (tanks or cartridges) comprised of cation and anion resins. DI systems produce various endpoint water qualities at various flow rates, depending on the configuration of the system. Therefore, each application must be considered independently. Years ago, high purity water was used only in limited applications. Today, deionized high purity water has become an essential ingredient in hundreds of applications, one of which is Spot-Free Rinse.

The vast majority of dissolved impurities in modern water supplies are ions such as calcium, sodium, chlorides, and iron. Through using a deionized water system, these ions can be removed through a technique called ion exchange. Positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) are exchanged for hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions, respectively, due to the resin's greater affinity for other ions. The ion exchange process occurs on the binding sites of the resin beads.

About TDS, CO2 and silica

Here is a chart that shows you how long it lasts based upon your TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level. Test the TDS of your water and select the levels of TDS that you have. You can also pick the C02 Level Column that is most appropriate. Carbon Dioxide is present in water in the form of a dissolved gas. Surface waters normally contain less than 10 ppm free carbon dioxide, while some ground waters may easily exceed that concentration. Carbon dioxide is readily soluble in water. The level of SiO2 (silica) in the water supply also affects the gallons produced as silicon dioxide is not soluble in water since the interaction between SiO2 and water molecules is insufficient to overcome the strong and extensive covalent bonds in the giant molecule.

In most cases, surface or city water are less than 10 ppm of C02 and the levels of silica are generally not an not an issue. Many companies do not post this chart, but we feel it is important as “knowledge is power.” We use a Type I quality Mixed Bed DI Resin. That means that there is noting that will produce higher quality water and nothing that will last as long.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the water quality is good?

No spots after rinsing is the simplest sign. For a number, use the included TDS meter: under 10 to 17 ppm means it is still rinsing spot-free. If spots appear, pre-rinse a little longer to clear any soap.

Can I recharge the resin myself?

We don’t recommend it. Regenerating DI resin takes concentrated acid, caustic and over $10,000 in equipment. When TDS reaches about 20 ppm, just swap in an easy refill kit.

What do I do with the spent resin?

Throw it away. Spent resin can go in a typical landfill with no special requirements.

"The Allegro DI spot-free rinse tank system does an excellent job of doing what it’s supposed to do. At first I thought I would use untreated water to wash with and then use the spot-free water for the final rinse when washing my cars. Now after using the system a couple times, I do the whole job with the treated water. Originally I had planned on hard plumbing the system in, but then decided to mount the system inside my garage and run a short hose to a hose bib, and then attach a longer hose to take the water out to the driveway. So far that’s working well."

I purchased a unit from

"I purchased a unit from US water systems, not realizing it would be too large for my personal use. So when it arrived, and I came to that conclusion, I called to get the information to send it back and get a smaller unit. I got the info and they indicated that it would take a couple of weeks after receiving the unit back to reimburse my payment. I paid for the return shipping, so there nothing to deduct from the order, everything was in the box, yet they felt that it was ok to not refund me my full amount back that I had paid. There was no explanation of what the $54. 78 was for and why it was being charged. Needless to say, I decided not to purchase a smaller unit from them and chose to purchase another system with another company. The $54. 78 cost them the sale of another unit as well as future purchases that I was considering making. Could not recommend or refer to others. I do not like hidden fees, just explain these things to your customers and let them know and let them make a decision based on all the information."

Will this remove salt from brackish well water? If so does reduce the system flow rate
: Technically, yes—the mixed-bed DI resin will remove dissolved salts such as sodium and chloride. However, we would not recommend using this system directly on brackish well water because the high TDS would exhaust the DI resin very quickly, making it costly to operate. For brackish water, reverse osmosis should typically be used first to remove the majority of the dissolved salts, with DI used afterward if extremely low TDS water is required. Higher TDS does not significantly reduce the system's flow rate; it primarily reduces how much water the resin can treat before it needs to be replaced. The 0.5 cu. ft. Allegro is rated for up to 2.5 GPM, and the 1.0 cu. ft. model is rated for up to 5 GPM
Is it possible to drain the water to prevent freezing in a garage that doesn't have heat?
Your best bet is to remove the head and use 3/8" tubing to siphon from the distributor tube. Shut the water off, relieve pressure, disconnect hoses, then carefully unthread the head and lift it straight up so you don’t crack or pull up the center distributor tube. Once the head is off, feed 3/8" flexible tubing down the distributor tube to the bottom of the tank and siphon into a lower bucket (or connect the tubing to a shop vac hose to suck the water out). This will pull out most of the free water from the tube and bottom of the tank.
What is the maximum water temperature that can be used with this system?
While not recommended to be used with hot water, the tank and fittings is your limitation with a 120 degree F temperature limit.
How much does the 1 cu ft tank weigh? Both without water and full of water.
The 1 cu ft tank is approximately 50 lbs. without water and 100 lbs. full of water.
