How Does a DI Spot-Free Rinse System Work

DI water systems typically consist of beds (tanks or cartridges) comprised of cation and anion resins. DI systems produce various endpoint water qualities at various flow rates, depending on the configuration of the system. Therefore, each application must be considered independently. Years ago, high purity water was used only in limited applications. Today, deionized high purity water has become an essential ingredient in hundreds of applications, one of which is Spot-Free Rinse.

The vast majority of dissolved impurities in modern water supplies are ions such as calcium, sodium, chlorides, and iron. Through using a deionized water system, these ions can be removed through a technique called ion exchange. Positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) are exchanged for hydrogen (H+) and hydroxyl (OH-) ions, respectively, due to the resin's greater affinity for other ions. The ion exchange process occurs on the binding sites of the resin beads.

DI or deionized water is simply water that has had most of the mineral content and dissolved ion content removed. It is just pure water. The cleanliness of the water is rated as its TDS (Total Dissolved Solids). It should be noted that pure water will not conduct electricity. It's the ions in the water that conduct the electricity. Deionization is simply an ion-exchange process in which water flows through resin beds or resin beads.

How Long Does It Last?

Here is a chart that shows you how long it lasts based upon your TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) level. Test the TDS of your water and select the levels of TDS that you have. You can also pick the C02 Level Column that is most appropriate. Carbon Dioxide is present in water in the form of a dissolved gas. Surface waters normally contain less than 10 ppm free carbon dioxide, while some ground waters may easily exceed that concentration. Carbon dioxide is readily soluble in water. The level of SiO2 (silica) in the water supply also affects the gallons produced as silicon dioxide is not soluble in water since the interaction between SiO2 and water molecules is insufficient to overcome the strong and extensive covalent bonds in the giant molecule.

In most cases, surface or city water are less than 10 ppm of C02 and the levels of silica are generally not an not an issue. Many companies do not post this chart, but we feel it is important as “knowledge is power.” We use the highest quality Mixed Bed DI Resin on the market today. There's no other resin on the market. That means that there is noting that will produce higher quality water and nothing that will last as long.

How Do I Know if the Water Quality is Good?

Well, ultimately, you will know because after rinsing, there will be no spots. However, if you test the water with the TDS Meter which comes with your Allegro system you can know if it is till producing spot-free rinse water if the TDS tests under 10 - 17 ppm. DI water typically has zero TDS which means that it is only H2O. Water likes to dissolve a little bit of everything it touches. This is why what it dissolves are called total dissolved solids.

When DI water touches the water that is on the vehicle's surface, it instantly starts absorbing the TDS that is in the hard water, this is okay. Spot-Free Rinsing occurs when the TDS is below 20 PPM or less. If there is any soap on the vehicle's surface, the DI water will adsorb it and typically the TDS level will go above the 20 PPM. If this occurs, you will start noticing spots on the vehicle's surface. It's not that the DI water isn't working, it's that the vehicle was not rinsed well enough prior to the spot-free water being applied. Therefore you will have to rinse it a little longer.

Can I Recharge It?

Once depleted of exchange capacity, the mixed bed anion and cation resin bed is regenerated with concentrated acid and caustic, which strips away accumulated ions through physical displacement, leaving hydrogen or hydroxyl ions in their place. Could you do this? Yes, theoretically you could, and you could also engage in going brain surgery on yourself. However, discourse both the self-directed brain surgery and do-it-yourself regeneration with acid and caustic. To safely do it, you would need to invest in equipment that costs in excess of $10,000 dollars. When the TDS level rises to about your desired point (typically 20 ppm), you simply change it out. We would advise you to change it and not try and regenerate it.

How Do I Change It?

What Do I Do With the Spent Resin?

It can be disposed of in a typical landfill. There are no other requirements on that.
