Which P Series UV system do you need?

Start with the certificate your plan reviewer requires, then size for peak flow.

Class A required: 500PN up to 16.5 GPM, or 750PN up to 27.4 GPM.
Independent validation required above that: 1000P, US EPA UVDGM validated; single-unit flow up to 100 GPM.
No certificate required: 500P or 750P, up to 40 GPM each. Neither carries third-party performance validation.
Above 100 GPM: multiple units. Request a multi-unit quote.

Sizing, honestly

More flow means a lower dose. Lower UV transmittance (UVT, the share of UV light your water lets through), or a higher required dose, means less flow per unit. Size for peak demand, not average, and talk to a specialist first if your UVT is low or you need a high dose.

Who sets the flow

You or your installer enter the target flow on the controller. The unit calculates dose against it and alarms when dose falls short. The setting does not physically cap flow, so if demand can run above it, fit a flow restrictor (standard on PN models, optional on the others).

Self-cleaning UV: less babysitting, more proof

Two lamps, not one.

Crossfire pairs two UV lamps with elliptical reflectors, so water is treated from all 360°. The leading certified rival runs a single lamp.

No film building up on the sleeves.

Hardness and iron coat quartz sleeves and cut the light. An automatic wiper cleans them every four hours, and a position switch confirms it moved. No routine sleeve pulling to scrub.

A lit lamp is not a dose.

Dual UV sensors (quad on the 1000P) calculate dose against your flow, not just whether the lamp is on. Low dose trips the alarm and its dry contact, and the optional 4-20 mA upgrade, which adds Modbus, feeds your SCADA.

Rated for hard water most UV asks you to soften.

Every P model is rated for hardness up to 855 mg/L and iron up to 3 mg/L. Typical certified units want softening above about 120 mg/L and iron below 0.3 mg/L.

How P Series UV disinfection works

Install after a prefilter.

Mount the unit after a 5-micron prefilter at the point of entry, as the O&M manual recommends, with turbidity at 1 NTU or less. The 500 and 750 models use 1" ports; the 1000P uses 2". Use metal pipe on the outlet.

Enter your target flow.

The operator or installer enters target flow on the controller, and the unit calculates dose against it. Set it to real peak flow. Where demand could run higher, fit the flow restrictor.

Watch dose around the clock.

UV sensors read output continuously. If dose drops below target, the unit alarms through its alarm dry contact. On 500 and 750 models, the optional 1" solenoid valve shuts off water on a fault, including power loss.

Keep up light maintenance.

The wiper keeps sleeves clean on its own. Replace lamps every 12 months, or 16 on the 1000P (rated 9,000 and 12,000 hours). Use original UV Pure lamps; others void the warranty and certification.

Certifications by model: Class A on the PN, UVDGM on the 1000P

Class A is NSF's rating for UV units that deliver at least 40 mJ/cm² with a UV sensor and alarm. NSF International certifies the 500PN at 16.5 GPM and the 750PN at 27.4 GPM, with 75% minimum UVT. For visually clear water that meets all other health standards; surface water or groundwater under the influence needs an NSF cyst-reduction device upstream.

Performance validated in accordance with the US EPA Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidance Manual, the EPA guidance for validating UV reactors by full-scale testing.

No third-party performance validation. Use them where no certificate is required.

Electrical safety.

Wetted parts meet both for water up to 73°F (23°C).

IEC 60335-1, IEC 60335-2-109 and CE on the 500PN and 750PN, which also carry Watermark of Australia. IECEE CB and CE on the 1000P.

Commercial UV disinfection questions buyers ask

Will my health department or plan reviewer sign off on it?

Sign-off depends on the certificate your reviewer names: the 500PN and 750PN carry NSF/ANSI 55 Class A, and the 1000P is validated to the US EPA UVDGM. Class A covers the 500PN up to 16.5 GPM and the 750PN up to 27.4 GPM; the 1000P runs up to 100 GPM. The 500P and 750P carry no third-party performance validation, so use them where no certificate is required. Confirm the requirement before you order.

The data sheet says up to 40 GPM. What will I actually get, and who sets the flow?

Up to 40 GPM is the single-unit maximum on the 500P and 750P data sheets; your real flow depends on your water, and you or your installer enter the target flow on the controller. Lower UVT or a higher required dose means less flow per unit. The unit alarms if dose falls short. The setting does not cap flow, so fit a flow restrictor where peak demand could exceed it.

Why would I buy a PN when the P runs more flow?

Buy a PN when your permit requires NSF/ANSI 55 Class A, because only the 500PN and 750PN carry it. In exchange they give up flow (16.5 and 27.4 GPM against 40) and need 75% UVT or better. Their standard flow restrictor also adds pressure drop: 22.7 psig at 75% of maximum flow, per the manual. If nobody requires Class A, the 500P or 750P gives you more flow per unit.

Do I need a prefilter or softener in front of it?

Plan on a 5-micron prefilter, but within the rated limits the UV itself does not call for a softener. The O&M manual recommends the prefilter and requires turbidity at 1 NTU or less and TDS up to 1,000 mg/L. The data sheets rate every model for hardness up to 855 mg/L and iron up to 3 mg/L. UVT must be 50-95%, or 75% minimum on PN models.

Does it have a fail-safe shut-off valve?

A shut-off valve is an optional add-on: a normally closed 1" solenoid valve on 500 and 750 models, or a 2" actuated ball valve on the 1000P. The solenoid shuts off water on a fault, including power loss. Confirm the 1000P ball valve's fail-safe behavior with a specialist before you rely on it for a permit, and add a valve wherever your permit calls for one.

Am I going to be pulling sleeves and chasing alarms?

No routine sleeve pulling: the automatic wiper keeps the quartz sleeves clean on its own. Replace lamps every 12 months (16 on the 1000P) with original UV Pure lamps, since others void the warranty and certification. Keep the prefilter changed and wire the alarm contacts to someone who will respond.

What does the warranty cover?

UV Pure's data sheets list 5 years on structural, hardware and mechanical parts; 3 years on electrical components and quartz sleeves; 12 months on bulbs (16 months on the 1000P); and 1 year on sensor probes. Coverage applies to the first end user and excludes labor.

We need more than 100 GPM. What are our options?

What does NSF/ANSI 55 Class A mean, and which models have it?

Class A is the NSF/ANSI 55 certification for UV units that disinfect visually clear water at a dose of at least 40 mJ/cm², with a UV sensor and alarm; in the P Series, only the 500PN and 750PN carry it. Class B is a lower-dose rating (16 mJ/cm²) for supplemental treatment of water already considered safe. The 1000P is validated to the US EPA UVDGM instead, and the 500P and 750P carry no third-party performance validation.

Can it report to our SCADA or building system?

Yes. Every unit has two dry contacts, one for warning and one for alarm, for your building or SCADA system. Add the optional 4-20 mA output for a live signal; Modbus comes with that option.
