Soft, Chlorine-Free Water: What You'll Notice in the First Few Weeks

The white crust stops coming back.

No more scrubbing the same hard water scale off shower glass and faucets every weekend. Dishes come out of the dishwasher spot-free because the minerals that leave those chalky spots never reach your kitchen. Soft water means spot-free dishes, brighter clothes, and softer skin.

You stop replacing appliances early.

Hard water scales up water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines from the inside until they die years ahead of schedule. Soft water adds years of life to your plumbing and appliances instead of quietly grinding them down.

Showers stop smelling like a swimming pool.

The carbon filter bed removes the chlorine taste and odor before the water reaches your shower head. That matters because you take in chlorine through skin and steam every time you shower, and it shows up as dry skin, dull hair, and that pool smell in the bathroom. With whole-house chlorine removal, every tap runs chlorine-free.

One tank instead of a basement full of equipment.

Most premium systems need a two-tank water softener and carbon filter combo plus a brine tank to do what the Matrixx-Hybrid does in one. Less floor space, one valve to maintain, and under two dollars a year in electricity.

What is a hybrid water softener?

A hybrid water softener is a single system that both softens water and filters it. The Matrixx-Hybrid does this in one tank: a carbon filter bed on top removes chlorine, chloramine, chemicals, and odors, and a softening resin bed below removes the hardness minerals that cause scale. One space-saving system, two water treatments, soft filtered water at every tap.

Why This Single-Tank Water Softener and Carbon Filter Works When Others Don't

Separated media beds, not a blended mix.

The skeptics are right about cheap hybrid tanks: dumping carbon and resin into one blended bed ruins both. The Matrixx-Hybrid's Vortech tank is split, with a dedicated carbon bed on top and a dedicated softening resin bed below. Each bed does its own job in its own layer, and because the carbon bed sits on top, it can be refreshed when the time comes without replacing the resin below.

Real whole-house flow from a single tank.

Budget cabinet hybrids top out around 8 gallons per minute and about 31,000 grains. The Matrixx-Hybrid comes in 10, 15, and 20 GPM sizes with up to 70,000 grains of capacity, on a 1-inch metered valve that flows up to 25 GPM. No other single-tank hybrid water softener does this at real household flow.

Lifetime warranty on the tanks and the resin.

Chlorine is what destroys softening resin. Because the carbon bed strips chlorine and chloramine before water ever reaches the resin, the resin lasts. So we warrant it for life, along with both tanks, and back the valve and electronics for 10 years. No two-tank premium combo warrants its resin for life.

Real experts answer the phone, before and after the sale.

The biggest complaint in this category is support that vanishes after checkout. US Water Systems has built and sold its own systems since 2001, with WQA-certified specialists, including Master Water Specialists, and nearly 300 years of combined experience picking up the phone. Other companies sell you a box. We solve your water problem.

How a Hybrid Water Softener Works: Two Treatments, One Tank, Four Steps

X-ray view of the Matrixx-Hybrid split Vortech tank: carbon filter bed in the top half, softening resin bed in the bottom half
1

Water enters the carbon filter bed.
City water flows into the top half of the Vortech tank, where coconut shell and catalytic carbon absorb chlorine, chloramine, chemicals, pesticides, VOCs, and the tastes and odors that ride along with them. Carbon comes before the resin on purpose: chlorine destroys softening resin, so filtering first protects the bed below.

2

The resin bed softens it.
Water then passes through a dedicated bed of 10% crosslinked softening resin in the bottom half, which removes the hardness minerals that cause scale through ion exchange. What leaves the tank is soft, filtered water headed to every tap.

3

The smart valve regenerates only when needed.
The 1-inch electronic metered valve tracks actual water use and regenerates on demand, not on a timer. That is how this metered water softener saves up to 75% on salt and sends up to 40% less water down the drain, fully programmable to your household.

4

You install it, we walk you through it.
Setup is homeowner-friendly: pour the media into the tank with the included funnel, connect the standard 1-inch or 3/4-inch fittings, and our specialists will walk you through every step by phone. Then pair the free Legacy View app over Bluetooth to monitor usage, adjust hardness, and start regenerations from your phone.

GPM (gallons per minute)

How much water the system can treat at once. More simultaneous showers and appliances need more GPM.

Grain capacity

How much hardness the resin can remove between regenerations. Harder water and bigger households use capacity faster.

Chloramine

A chlorine-ammonia disinfectant many cities now use. It resists standard carbon, which is why the Matrixx-Hybrid includes catalytic carbon.

How the Matrixx-Hybrid Compares

Here is how the Matrixx-Hybrid compares to a cabinet hybrid, a two-tank water softener and carbon filter combo, and a salt-free conditioner.

Matrixx-Hybrid Budget Cabinet Hybrids Two-Tank Premium Combos Salt-Free Conditioners
Price $$ $ $$$ $$
Tanks in your basement 1 treatment tank + brine tank 1 cabinet 2 treatment tanks + brine tank 1-2 tanks

Max capacity Up to 70,000 grains ~31,000 grains Varies by brand No true softening capacity

Compared with a two-tank softener and carbon combo, the Matrixx-Hybrid does both jobs with one treatment tank instead of two, one less vessel on your floor and one valve to maintain, while its separated internal beds keep the two-tank advantages: proper backwash for each media and carbon replacement that never disturbs the resin. And unlike a salt-free conditioner, which does not remove hardness minerals at all, the Matrixx-Hybrid uses salt-based ion exchange, so it delivers true soft water and spot-free dishes. Dealer-installed brands doing these same two jobs often run two to three times more once installation and markups are added. The Matrixx-Hybrid ships factory-direct from the manufacturer.

Hybrid Water Softener Questions Homeowners Ask Before Buying

Does a water softener remove chlorine?

No. A standard water softener removes hardness minerals through ion exchange but does not remove chlorine. The Matrixx-Hybrid solves that in one system by adding a dedicated carbon filter bed in the same tank, which removes chlorine and chloramine before the water reaches the softening resin. You get soft water and chlorine-free water at every tap without buying a second piece of equipment.

Do single-tank water softener and carbon filter combos really work?

Blended-media single-tank hybrids do fail, and the Matrixx-Hybrid works because its Vortech tank keeps carbon and resin in two separated beds instead of one blended mix. Mixing carbon and resin in one bed means neither gets properly backwashed, so both wear out early. That is where single-tank hybrids earned their bad reputation. In the Matrixx-Hybrid, the dedicated carbon bed sits on top and the dedicated resin bed sits below. Each bed does its own job in its own dedicated layer, and because the carbon sits on top, it can be refreshed down the road without disturbing the resin below. That separation is exactly why we can warrant the resin for life.

Can I actually get a real person on the phone, before and after I buy?

Yes. Call us and you reach a certified water specialist, including WQA Master Water Specialists, not a salesperson reading a script. Tell them about your water, your home size, and your plumbing, and they will confirm which size Matrixx-Hybrid fits, or tell you honestly if a different system suits you better. The same people answer the phone after the sale, for installation walk-throughs and anything else. They have been doing it since 2001.

I'm on well water with iron or sulfur. Will this handle it?

Not on its own. The Matrixx-Hybrid is built for municipal (city) water, and we will not pretend otherwise. Iron, sulfur, sand, tannins, or methane will foul the system, and that damage is not covered by the warranty. On a well, you need pretreatment in front of it, or possibly a different system entirely. Call our specialists first; they will tell you exactly what your water needs before you spend a dollar.

Honestly, how hard is this to install myself?

Most handy homeowners can do it. There is no multi-day carbon soaking like some systems require: you pour the media into the tank with the included funnel during setup (a helper makes this easier), thread on the valve by hand, connect the standard 1-inch or 3/4-inch MPT fittings, and plug the valve into a normal outlet. If you get stuck at any point, our specialists will walk you through it over the phone. If DIY is not your thing, any local plumber can install it with standard fittings.

What size water softener do I need?

Three sizes cover almost every home: the 10 GPM model (35,000 grains max) for smaller homes, the 15 GPM (53,000 grains) for most family homes, and the 20 GPM (70,000 grains) for large homes with multiple bathrooms running at once. The 1-inch valve flows up to 25 GPM, so pressure holds up when showers, laundry, and irrigation overlap. Not sure? Call a specialist with your water hardness and bathroom count and they will size it in minutes.

What's the upkeep really like? Salt, filters, all of it.

Upkeep is adding salt to the brine tank when it runs low, pouring in a monthly dose of ResKleen resin cleaner on city water (your first 16-ounce bottle is included), and refreshing the carbon bed every few years depending on your chlorine levels and water use. There is one internal moving part, no filter cartridges in the main tank, and the valve regenerates only when your usage calls for it. The Legacy View app shows you what the system is doing, so you are never guessing. Electricity costs under two dollars a year.

One Tank. Both Problems. Handled.

Stop scrubbing scale and smelling chlorine in your shower. The Matrixx-Hybrid is the water softener with carbon filter that fixes both in one tank, backed by a lifetime warranty on tanks and resin. And when our Master Water Specialists design the system around your laboratory water test, it will do what we say for your water within the first year, or we will make it right, up to your money back, per policy terms.

"Water tested mineral free after install!"

Custom support is lacking

"I was looking for a system that would be better then what Costco offers and at a better price. I had a good initial conversation and they told me it would take 1 week to ship (at a cost of $300+). It took 3 weeks to get here and the 16 wheeler had issues getting the truck to my neighborhood (The lift broke down and it took 1. 5 hours to get the unit off the truck). Had some issues with the install and asked for Spanish support (a call back), but they never called me back. Overall not happy with process. I think I would have paid more and just got the complete job done by Costco."

I'm telling all my neighbors!

"After researching water softeners for months, I decided on the Matrixx-Hybrid Filter and Smart Water Softener. I decided I could install it myself, I was very pleased with the detailed instructions (I normally throw them out) which made the installation easy. I did have one issue with my Hybrid filter, for some reason it had a small leak. I made a call to Support and they had a new one shipped out to the next day. Great customer service!! I'm very happy with my system, no more hard water stains on the show doors, dishes come out without spots and I can drink water right out of the tap now. I live in a new development so I'm now telling all my neighbors to go by the Matrixx system!"

Q&A

Is there a by pass valve on the system?
Yes - the system comes with a bypass valve.
During the regeneration phase how much waste water is generated? I’m trying to figure out if my floor drain and sump pump can handle it
use the Drain/Regeneration chart down the product page (it shows the regen steps and drain GPM for each unit size and for High Efficiency / Optimal / Maximum). From that chart they can calculate: Total wastewater (gallons) = (Backwash minutes × Backwash GPM) (Brine Draw minutes × Brine Draw GPM) (Fast Rinse minutes × Fast Rinse GPM) And for sump/floor drain capacity, the key number is the peak GPM shown in the chart (that’s what the drain sees during backwash/fast rinse).
Can the water softener systems be installed outdoors? Do you have protective covers for them? If anything goes wrong with the system who do I call to analyze and repair the system?
Yes—the Matrixx Hybrid can sit outdoors so long as it’s shielded from sun, rain, and freezing temperatures. There is no protective cover available for this valve, many people will utilize a utility shed of some sort. If you ever need troubleshooting or repairs, just ring US Water Systems Technical Support at 800‑608‑8792 and our team will walk you through diagnostics
When its time to change the carbon inside the tank...Who does it..How hard...what is the process ?? And any July 4th sales?
The carbon gets replaced about every 3-5 years depending on water usage. Typically can be done by homeowner or a handyman and our tech support team can walk you through it.
With the tank being split into two sections, is the resin still as effective as it would be without the carbon section? Basically, with less resin space, is the water softener just as effective or is it a trade off with the carbon filtering off chlorine?
There is somewhat of a tradeoff in effectiveness. Overall, if space and convenience are your priorities, this system can be a great choice. However, if you have very high water usage or particularly challenging water conditions, you might want to consider whether separate units would better meet your needs in terms of capacity and maintenance.
