The Matrixx Nitrate Removal System utilizes professional grade components and high efficiency resin to ensure that your water stays nitrate free for years. This system utilizes salt to regenerate the resin, so while it looks like a water softener it doesn’t serve as one. If you have water that has a hardness of 5 gpg then you will still need a water softener.

Benefits of Nitrate Removal

Consuming too much nitrate can affect how blood carries oxygen and can cause methemoglobinemia (also known as blue baby syndrome). Bottle-fed babies under six months old are at the highest risk of getting methemoglobinemia. Methemoglobinemia can cause skin to turn a bluish color and can result in serious illness or death. Other symptoms connected to methemoglobinemia include decreased blood pressure, increased heart rate, headaches, stomach cramps, and vomiting.

Only recently has scientific evidence emerged to assess the health impacts of drinking water with high nitrate consumption in adults. A growing body of literature indicates potential associations between nitrate/nitrite exposure and other health effects such as increased heart rate, nausea, headaches, and abdominal cramps. Some studies also suggest an increased risk of cancer, especially gastric cancer, associated with dietary nitrate/nitrite exposure, but there is not yet scientific consensus on this question.

Q&A

What is the tank actually made of? I ordered one and it was delivered today it's definitely not a chrome tank. The plastic outside cover definitely looks like chrome, but very much just plastic junk.
The structural pressure tank is a fiberglass-reinforced composite vessel with a durable plastic liner. The chrome-colored exterior is a non-structural plastic tank jacket designed to protect the pressure vessel and provide a finished appearance—it is not chrome-plated metal. We apologize if the term “chrome tank protector” created that impression. The plastic outer jacket does not affect the system’s strength, performance, or lifetime tank warranty.
Is a special type of salt required for regeneration?
No special salt is required. Use standard water-softener salt, preferably high-purity evaporated salt pellets or solar salt crystals. Avoid rock salt because its higher impurity content can create sludge in the brine tank.
I already have a water softener, I only need the nitrate removal tank. Do you sell them separately and is the filter a cartridge you replace. Thanks
Thanks for reaching out — great question, and this one trips up a lot of folks because the Matrixx Nitrate system looks like a softener at first glance. Here's the quick breakdown: the system is sold as a complete unit with two tanks that work together — a tall resin tank (9" x 48") and a shorter brine (salt) tank. Even though it resembles a softener, the tall tank is filled with a special nitrate-selective resin, not softening resin, and the brine tank's only job is to hold the salt used to periodically regenerate that nitrate resin. Both tanks are required for the system to function, so they're not sold separately. The good news is that it's designed to run alongside your existing water softener, not replace it — so your current softener stays right where it is and continues handling hardness. The Matrixx Nitrate simply gets plumbed in as its own dedicated stage for nitrate removal. And to your cartridge question — there's no cartridge to swap out. The nitrate resin inside the tank typically lasts many years, and routine maintenance is just keeping the brine tank filled with salt and occasionally using ResKleen resin cleaner (a free bottle is included with your purchase). If you'd like help with flow rate sizing (7 GPM or 15 GPM) or the ideal plumbing order alongside your softener, give us a call at (800) 608-8792 — our Certified Water Specialists would be glad to walk you through it.
It is necessary to mineralize the water after this system is installed?
No, mineralization is not typically needed after this system. This unit is designed to remove nitrates from the water using specialty resin, but it does not demineralize the water the way a reverse osmosis system does. In most applications, no additional mineralization step is required. If you have other water quality concerns or want to address taste and drinking water preferences, our water specialists can help recommend any additional treatment if needed.
Does this system reduce water pressure?
There can be a small normal pressure drop, as with any water treatment system, but it should not significantly reduce pressure when the correct size is selected for the home. This model is available in 7 GPM and 15 GPM sizes, so proper sizing is the key.
