"My Whirlpool water softener is 10 years old and I had a choice to make: replace the entire unit or just replace the resin. Whirlpool customer service was discouraging me from replacing the resin but after reading their own instructions how to do it I decided to go for replacing the resin. A bit of Internet research led me to a 10% cross linked resin which is better than the original 8% Whirlpool resin. It also turned out that the resin from US Water Systems was far less expensive than Wirlpools's own. The replacement was not difficult. The only tricky part was removing the old resin as the tank with wet resin is very heavy. The solution is to suck it out with wet/dry shop vacuum. If you do not have one simply buy it for about $50-$70. The total cost was about $500 less than replacing the water softener and no contribution to additional dump of old appliances. The water softener works better than new because the new resin is more efficient than the original."
