Carb-Cat Granular Activated Catalytic Carbon

Technical Overview

Carb-Cat is a liquid phase virgin activated carbon that is manufactured to develop catalytic functionality. It is a produced from coconut shell GAC using a highly sophisticated and confidential process. Of course, it is NSF Certified. The catalytic activity of this activated carbon makes it highly effective for the removal of chloramines and hydrogen sulfide from potable water.

It's extremely large micropore volume makes it particularly well suited for the removal of low molecular weight organic compounds and their chlorinated by-products such as chloroform and other trihalomethanes (THMs). An important feature of this material is its superior mechanical hardness and the extensive dedusting during its manufacture ensures an exceptionally clean activated carbon product. Catalytic carbon is engineered to remove chloramines, hydrogen sulfide, VOCs, iron, chemicals, chlorine, tastes, and odors.

Carb-Cat has a very high reaction kinetic for the removal of chloramines from potable water which are specially designed to carry a large number of catalytic sights compared to products from other catalytic carbons so as to react with and remove different types of chloramines, including monochloramine.

While US Water Systems has a strong preference for US Made Products, the fact of the matter is that the best premium-grade coconut shell carbon is made in Sri Lanka under very exacting standards and world-class processes. This is not from China, Taiwan or India, but rather from the World’s Best Coconut Shell Carbon Manufacturer which offers the greatest absorptive capability.

Features And Benefits

All Catalytic Carbon is not created equal and the fact of the matter is that there is no equal to Carb-Cat. If you are using Jacobi or Centaur Catalytic Carbon, it might be time to use the best carbon in the business.

  • Catalytic activity allows for smaller more compact system sizing
  • NSF Certified
  • Greater degree of contaminant removal
  • Enhanced Catalytic activity
  • Large and extensive internal pore structure
  • Optimized density
  • Maximum hardness
  • Low dust and turbidity
  • Excellent adsorption capacity
  • High volume activity
  • Rapid de-chlorination
  • Low filtered water turbidity
  • Engineered to be better than Jacobi CX-MCA and Centaur Catalytic Carbon

The Catalytic Carbon Advantage

As more and more municipalities use Chloramine (mixing chlorine with ammonia), the issue becomes, how do you remove it? Regular GAC carbon does not effectively remove chloramine, while catalytic carbon does. If your municipality does not use Chloramine today, the odds are, they will use it at some time because it is less expensive. It’s all about the money…

Typical Applications

  • Residential water treatment systems - Point of Entry (POE) / Point of Use (POU)
  • Beverage production
  • Protection of ion exchange resins from Chloramines
  • Chloramine Removal
  • Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

Packaging

  • 1 cubic foot bags
  • Approx. 27.5 pounds per cubic foot
  • 40 bags to a skid

I'm being optimistic and giving

"I'm being optimistic and giving this carbon 5 stars, even though I just replaced it yesterday. My first batch of carbon lasted 7 years, but three years ago I didn't use coconut shell carbon and it only lasted 2. 5 years (yes, I've had stinky water for six months, but wasn't going to change it during the winter). I am the only person in this house, so I'm hopeful that this will last me at least 5 years."

Product can as expected. Works

"Product can as expected. Works great!"

Just What Was Needed

"Replaced carbon. Water smells sweet again! Just what was needed."

Michael K. (5/5)

Carb cat

"This works very well in my Kinetico 4040 and does an excellent job of dechlorination. Lasts longer than traditional carbon."

Steve S. (5/5)

Cat carbon

"Works great."

Shawn M. (5/5)

Fixed our suddenly very yellow/brown water

"Turns out our carbon had become oversaturated with iron, etc and this immediately fixed it. Water is clear again."

Great Customer Service

"I called and the staff was super helpful in clearing up some questions I had. Purchased everything I needed to rebuild my sulphur and iron filter easily and didn't cost much. Thank you!"

US Water Carbon Works Great!

"US Water catalytic carbon has been working great to clear out the iron in the well water here. So far it’s been doing the job as other more expensive media. The water tastes great after changing to this carbon. Being able to buy the carbon in 1/2 cubic foot backs is very convenient. We no longer have to purchase and store more than the filter needs. My order was shipped quickly, was packaged well, and arrived in great shape. I will continue to purchase product from this company."

John R. (5/5)

Great product

"This stuff is better than the Jacobi and uses less peroxide too. I would buy this again."

Timothy R. (5/5)

Carbon

"The carbon works as advertised. It removed the sulfur smell from my water. It is very dusty so wear goggles and a mask."

Q&A

Is this the correct media for replacing a well water gac filter previously installed to mitigate moderate levels of radon, or can I use the non catalytic?
For radon in well water, you generally do not need catalytic carbon. Radon removal in a POE “radon carbon tank” is accomplished by adsorption on standard GAC, and performance is driven far more by carbon bed size, flow rate/contact time (EBCT), and radon loading than whether the carbon is catalytic. What to use Yes — a non-catalytic, high-quality GAC is typically the correct media for a radon GAC filter replacement. Catalytic carbon isn’t “more radon-capable”; it’s chosen when you also need help with things like chloramines (city water) or hydrogen sulfide odor—not radon. (Well water usually has no chloramines.)
What mesh size is this product and when used in a 5 x 20 NON-backwashing filter how often should it be replaced?
The mesh size is 12x40. Lifespan will greatly depend on feed water contaminants and water usage but in a non backwashing filter housing, you should change annually.
How often does this need to be replaced?
Generically, we say 3-5 years but the lifespan of the carbon would greatly depend on it's use and application.
