Chlorine and Chloramine

  • Chlorine is an oxidizer that is commonly used to reduce organic matter and/or disinfect water by municipalities.
  • Chloramine is made by mixing chlorine and ammonia together which stabilizes the effects of the chlorine, resulting in much less being used.
  • Chlorine is objectionable for bathing and drinking in concentrations as low as .5 PPM - A swimming pool maybe 2.0 to 3.0 PPM.

    The Matrixx Catalytic Carbon Backwashing Filter is fully automatic and uses all NSF and FDA approved components, including the catalytic granular activated carbon (CGAC). The electronic computer control cleans the carbon of accumulated contaminants while delivering clean, clear, fresh, chlorine, and chloramine-free water throughout your home. It also reduces chemicals, trihalomethanes (THM's), pesticides, heavy metals, tastes, and odors. The electronic control center is easy to set and incorporates an automatic backwash which removes accumulated contaminants by automatically backwashing the filtration media. Typically, on municipal water, the system only needs to backwash every one to two weeks for just a few minutes.

    The carbon used is a catalytic, high activity granular activated carbon manufactured by steam activation of select coconut shell carbon. The catalytic activity of this activated carbon makes it highly effective for the removal of chloramines from potable water. Its large micro-pore volume makes it particularly well suited for the removal of low molecular weight organic compounds and their chlorinated by-products such as chloroform and other trihalomethanes (THMs). An important feature of this material is its superior mechanical hardness and the extensive de-dusting during its manufacture ensures an exceptionally clean activated carbon product.

    "I purchased a full US Water system that include the water softener and the Matrixx catalytic carbon filter. I should have done this years ago- it works, it is super simple to install and customer service is excellent. Your municipality treats water so it can be delivered to your residence. But for everyday consumption, we must make water perfect by removing all chemicals. Give US Water System your water report and their team will tell you exactly what to do. Also, inquire about their under the sink reverse osmosis. If you purchase one of these, you will never have to purchase another bottle water again!"

    Excellent for Removing Chlorimine

    "Ordered to remove chlorimine from Indianapolis municipal water supply. My water quality is much better, with basically all of the chemical odor removed. Tested for total chlorine with a test kit and the water appears basically chlorine free. Will be using water to raise fish in stock tanks. I would recommend US Water systems. The initial purchase was expensive, but I believe the cost is worth it."

    Whole house filtration system for well

    "We purchased a full system from US Water. They were very helpful in guiding us through what equipment we should put together to handle our iron bacteria, acidic water and bacteria. The instructions were clear, and the help line was very responsive. We are very happy with our purchase about 6 months later, and will continue to purchase and recommend US Water. I do wish they would provide total piping layout for the system, as that took some time and effort to layout. We installed a number of shutoff valves to allow for the different pieces of equipment to be isolated in case of cleaning or maintenance."

    "We have 13 ppm of iron in our well water (ferrous) along with a high level of manganese. A Youtube content creator on wells recommended an air injection filter and then a water softener to remove any residual iron that the air injection didn't catch. We purchased both and as soon as we turned on the water, we had orange water. It oxidized the iron, but the media didn't remove all of what it was oxidizing. We then tried a hydrogen peroxide system from another popular well water store. It caused the water to be orange as well so they recommended a Pro Ox filter which we also purchased. We turned the peroxide up to the recommended range and again there was orange water. I finally came across this system from US Water Systems. I sent an email and Scott reached out to me. He sent me a link to the tank and media since we already had a peroxide injection system. I was definitely leery, but he assured me that this filter would catch everything being oxidized. He was 100% correct. I turned up the peroxide to what it should have been and the water was immediately clear once we hooked this filter up. It has remained clear and I can't state how impressed I am with our water now. I highly recommend Scott and US Water. He didn't try to upsell me anything I didn't need and he solved our water issues!"

    We are building a new home, and considering getting the Matrixx system. Would we need to tell the builder anything specific to accommodate this system? Like a floor drain, or additional outlets?
    yes, tell the builder a few specific things. A Matrixx backwashing carbon filter is pretty easy to accommodate if you plan for (1) plumbing loop, (2) drain, (3) outlet, and (4) a bit of space.
    My tap water has ammonia in it. Will my ammonia test show 0 ppm ammonia using this filter?
    The US Water Matrixx Catalytic Carbon Backwashing Filter is excellent for removing a wide range of contaminants from water, including chloramines, which are formed when ammonia is combined with chlorine to treat drinking water.
