Six Tips to Hydrate for Your Health

504x stay hydrated Are you staying hydrated? Your body is about 60% water! During the hot summer months, it's essential to keep fully hydrated for your health. Water controls your body's temperature, heart rate and blood pressure along with giving you healthy skin, hair and nails. Here are six tips to help your hydration:
  • Plenty of fruits are full of water! Did you know that watermelon is 90% water? Other fruits such as grapefruit, cantaloupe, honeydew and oranges also have high water concentration. While vegetables aren't as full of water as fruit, they can be nutrient-rich water sources. Try cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers or celery.
  • If you're bored with plain water, why not add some flavor to it? Squeeze a little lemon in a glass of water, or spruce it up with some raspberries, mint, cucumber or lime. Make your own fruity combinations that are healthier than sugar-packed juices and sports drinks.
  • If you're sweating, you're losing water! While working out, drink 16 ounces of water one hour prior, 4-8 ounces every 15-20 minutes during and another 16 ounces afterwards. Although this amount varies person to person, it is a rough estimate for an athletic adult. Make sure you're drinking water during any physical activity to prevent dehydration.
  • Set reminders on your phone, watch or email to drink a glass of water. Start your day by drinking a glass of water even before you have your morning coffee to replace fluids lost overnight. You should be drinking one glass every hour and a glass before each meal. You might think you're hungry when in reality, you're just thirsty!
  • Fill a reusable, glass water bottle and take it with you in the car, to work, to the gym, etc.. This will ensure you always have clean water on hand. If you install water filters or a whole-home system, you know that the water you're drinking is clean, healthy and filtered. Using bottled water is both expensive and wasteful. Plus, you never know what's in that water!
  • While cooking, use high-quality sea salt. Unrefined sea salt is rich in trace minerals, which are key to cell health and hydration. Sea salt contains over 84 minerals and nutrients that our body needs on a daily basis, and it has been used all throughout history for health reasons. You can event add a pinch to a glass of water to satisfy your thirst.
