Jo et al. (1990) · Risk AnalysisMeasured chloroform in the exhaled breath of volunteers who showered with and without rubber wetsuits, a way to isolate the dermal route. Results estimated that the dermal and inhalation routes contributed roughly equal amounts of chloroform to total body burden during showering.

Hot water widens blood vessels and opens pores, which makes skin more permeable. Your skin is your largest organ, and in a hot shower it's soaking up compounds across its whole surface area for as long as you stand there.

The Dermatological Evidence

Published research backs the link between water chemistry and skin health, though the field is still developing.

A 2018 study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that hard water combined with surfactant residue (from soaps and cleansers) significantly increased skin barrier damage in eczema patients. The study looked at hard water specifically, but the researchers noted that chlorine compounds disrupt the skin's protective layers in much the same way.
