Less hard water scale: what changes after GreenWave goes in

You already know the signs of hard water: white crust on the aerators, film on the shower glass, a water heater that works harder every year. GreenWave goes after the limescale itself.

Before: hard water scale and mineral buildup on household fixturesAfter: clean, scale-free fixturesBeforeAfter

Stops scale on faucets and shower heads.

Far less scale bakes onto aerators and fixtures. The spots that still form wipe off with a cloth instead of a scraper or harsh chemicals.

Clean white tank water heater in a bright, tidy utility room

Appliances that last longer.

Scale builds up first where water gets hot. GreenWave helps keep the tank and heating elements free of scale, so it can run the way it was built to.

Homeowner walking from an SUV with a light grocery tote, no salt bags to carry

No more hauling salt.

No 40-pound bags in the trunk, no brine tank to refill, no regeneration schedule. Nothing to plug in, nothing to program, nothing to babysit.

Hands rinsing under a clear stream from a chrome bathroom faucet

Water that still feels like water.

No slippery feel and no added sodium. Soap and shampoo may rinse off faster than with softened water.

A Salt-Free Conditioner You Can Rely On

Homeowner at a kitchen sink checking a water hardness test strip

Keeps the minerals, stops the scale.

GreenWave leaves calcium and magnesium in your water and stops them from sticking as scale, so your hardness test reads the same after install while the crust goes away. If you want soft water with that slippery feel, our specialists will point you to a softener instead of selling you the wrong system.

Homeowner relaxing on the couch, hands behind his head, after an easy GreenWave install

Easy to install yourself.

No worries about running a drain, hooking up a brine tank or wiring in electricity. GreenWave is plug and play: drop it in on your main line with standard 1" connections and the included bypass valve, and our DIY videos walk you through every step.

Conditioner media beads being poured into a clear measuring beaker

Lower cost to keep it running.

When the media is spent, you buy a rebed kit and keep the tank, at a lower cost per liter than some other brands charge for replacement media. GreenWave also publishes its media volume for every size, 3, 5 or 7 liters, so you know what you are paying for.

How GreenWave keeps scale from sticking

Special media inside the tank turns dissolved calcium into tiny, harmless crystals that flow through your pipes instead of sticking to them. Here is what happens inside the tank.

GreenWave up-flow TAC conditioner tank, the vessel where template-assisted crystallization happens
1

Step 1: Water flows up through the tank.
Hard water enters at the bottom and flows upward. That flow lifts the media into a fluidized bed, so water moves around every grain and none passes through untreated.

2

Step 2: The media seeds tiny crystals.
On the media's surface, dissolved calcium bicarbonate turns into microscopic calcium carbonate crystals. The calcium is still in your water. It has simply changed form.

3

Step 3: Crystals ride through your plumbing.
The crystals release, stay suspended in the water and pass through your pipes and fixtures. Because the calcium is already crystallized, far less of it grabs onto hot surfaces as hard scale. That matters most in your water heater, where heat makes scale form fastest.

4

Step 4: Nothing to regenerate.
There is no salt, no backwash and no electricity, so there is no wastewater in daily operation. The media keeps working until it is spent, and a rebed kit refreshes it.

Questions people ask before they buy

Will this give me soft water?

No. GreenWave is a salt-free water conditioner, not a softener, so the hardness minerals stay in your water and a hardness test reads the same before and after. You will not get the slippery feel, and spots will still form, though they wipe off much easier. If soft water is what you want, a salt-based softener is the right choice and our specialists will say so.

I'm on city water. What else do I need to buy?

You need a carbon pre-filter ahead of GreenWave, because chlorine in city water fouls the media and can void the media warranty. That adds to your total cost, so plan for it from the start. A whole-house filter add-on is available on this page, and a specialist can confirm what your water needs.

How do I know if it's actually working?

You can tell it is working when less scale shows up: faucet aerators should crust over less, and fixture spots should wipe away with a cloth. No meter or test strip can prove a conditioner is working, so watching scale is the honest measure. In the first 30 to 90 days, loosened old scale may briefly clog aerators or cloud the water.

I'm on a well. Will this work for me?

Wells often carry iron, manganese, sulfur or sediment, and those can foul the media if they reach GreenWave untreated. If you are on a well, we recommend calling one of our certified water specialists before you order, so they can look at what is in your water and tell you what, if anything, should go in front of GreenWave.

Water softeners are banned where I live. Can I use this?

In most cases, yes, because a salt-free conditioner like GreenWave discharges no brine. Some California communities prohibit new salt softeners that send brine to the sewer. Newhall Ranch's rule, effective October 1, 2026, states that salt-free conditioning systems are still allowed. No state bans softeners outright, so check your local rule before you buy.

Can I install it myself?

If you are comfortable with basic plumbing, yes. It connects with 1" fittings and includes a bypass valve. You pour the media into the tank on site, let it soak 30 minutes, then flush it before use. It must be the last whole-house stage, indoors and protected from freezing.

How long does the media last?

Media life depends on your water and how much you use, so we do not promise a fixed number of years. The sign it is spent is scale coming back. When that happens, you buy a rebed kit and keep the tank. Day to day there is nothing to refill or program, and draining the water heater after install and at one year helps clear old scale.

Can I talk to someone before I buy?

Yes, and we encourage it. Call and talk with a certified water specialist, not a script reader. Tell us about your water, and we will tell you whether GreenWave, a softener or something else fits your home.

Protect your plumbing from scale. Skip the salt for good.

Better than I expected

"I didn't really know what to expect from this system, I recently moved to an area of California where water softeners are banned. I've had a water softener at every house I've owned prior to this move, so I have to say this system performs better than I was expecting."

Q&A

How much media do you use? I just read on your description that "most companies do not tell you how much Anti-Scale Media is inside their tanks. However, if you check, you will find out that it is generally about half of what we use" but then, as far as I can tell, you also do not tell us how much Anti-Scale Media you do in fact use! :)
Great question — the amount of media varies by the size of the system, so there is not one single number that applies to every GreenWave model. The best thing to do is call and speak with one of our Water Specialists, and we can tell you exactly how much media is in the specific size you are looking at.
I have hard water from a private well: 135 ppm. Is the green wave salt free alternative a good option to reduce scale build up? Can you drink the water treated with a green wave system?
GreenWave can be a good option if your goal is to help reduce scale buildup from moderately hard water like 135 ppm. It is a salt-free conditioner, so it does not remove hardness minerals like a traditional water softener. Instead, it changes the way those minerals behave so they are less likely to stick to plumbing fixtures, water heaters, and other surfaces as scale. Yes, the treated water is safe to drink. Because it is salt-free, it does not add sodium to the water. If your main goal is true soft water and complete hardness removal, a conventional softener would be the better option. Also, on private well water, any iron, manganese, sulfur, or similar contaminants should be treated ahead of the GreenWave so the media does not become fouled
How many gallons on average does the system filter? Do not say 4-6 years, we need to know the average lifespan in gallons.
The GreenWave isn’t actually a filter and it isn’t rated in gallons the same way a carbon or sediment cartridge is. It uses a special TAC (Template Assisted Crystallization) media that changes the form of hardness minerals so they don’t stick to pipes and fixtures, but it does not remove them from the water. Because of that: It does not filter out chlorine, tastes/odors, sediment, or other contaminants. It does not lower TDS or soften the water in the traditional sense – the minerals are still there, just conditioned so they don’t form hard scale. Any “lifespan” in gallons is an estimate of how long the media will effectively condition the water for scale control, not how many gallons it “filters.” That said, in typical municipal water conditions that are within the GreenWave’s limits for chlorine, iron, manganese, copper, and pH, systems using this type of TAC/Next ScaleStop media generally treat on the order of 500,000–600,000 gallons of water before the media needs to be replaced.
The only problem I have with my well water is the high magnesium and calcium content, that are off the char ! Would this fix my problem? And how long does it keep the minerals suspended in the water? And would it protect my new water heater ?
We recommend contacting one of our trained water specialist @ 800-608-8792 to share your test results and discuss your best options.
After the 4 to 6 years of use is their an indicator that advises the media is spent? Can the unit be reloaded with new media, or does the entire unit need replacing?
The GreenWave system does not feature an automatic indicator to signal when the media is exhausted. However, there are observable signs that suggest it's time to replace the media: Reduced Scale Prevention: If you notice an increase in scale buildup on fixtures or appliances, it may indicate that the media is no longer effectively conditioning the water. Changes in Water Quality: A noticeable change in water taste or clarity could suggest the media's effectiveness has diminished. You do not need to replace the entire GreenWave unit when the media is spent. US Water Systems offers rebed kits specifically designed for this purpose. These kits include the necessary amount of Filtersorb SP3 media, a funnel, distributor tube cap, and silicone lubricant.
